Dr. Weils 4-7-8 Breathing Technique Demonstration

Recently, as part of my Health Coaching training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, we had a lecture with Dr. Andrew Weil. He showed us this breathing technique, & I’ve been doing it religiously ever since. It’s too good not to share!

3 Takeaways from the May 2014 Institute for Integrative Nutrition Conference

#IINLive was packed full of brilliant speakers, and it would simply be impossible to share everything in a single blog post. The Institute for Integrative Nutrition offers so much more than an amazing nutrition program & I want to highlight that. So here are 3 examples of how diverse the schools teaching are…

COMMUNITY: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” ~Margaret Mead

Granted IIN has thousand of students across the globe, but in the grand scheme of things, I think the above quote from Margaret Mead is applicable! The Institute for Integrative Nutrition is not just a school, its a movement ,and never has this been more obvious to me than while streaming #IINLive. Despite the fact that I was tuning in “alone” (albeit I was interacting on social media), I really felt the energy of the IIN community and what’s more, I felt part of it! Beyond a shadow of a doubt, this school is well on its way to accomplishing it’s mission;

To play a crucial role in improving health & happiness, and through that process, create a ripple effect that transforms the world”

HEALTH: Think Waist, not Weight!

We live in a weight obsessed world, and who could blame us for wanting to turn a blind eye to the number on the scales. In the long run though, we are not doing ourselves any favours by ignoring it. We’ve all heard about  people who wake up one morning, & suddenly realise that they are 100lbs overweight! Alas, I have good news for those of you that are filled with dread at the thoughts of being weighed. Dr Oz says that your waist size may actually be a more important indicator of your level of health. So get out your measuring tapes & make sure that your waist is not any more than your height in inches divided by 2!

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: Everything is Figureoutable!

I love Marie Forleo, and not just because she uses words like “figureoutable”! (Seriously though, isn’t it a great word?) I have to agree with Marie when she says that if we really want something, we will move mountains to get it. The fact is, that if we aren’t prepared to do that, we don’t want it badly enough. Let’s stop lying to ourselves; it’s not that we don’t have enough time, or that we can’t afford it. It is simply not a priority for us right now. How much more empowering is that? If you are not familiar with Marie’s work, you should check it out here.

As always, I encourage you to get in touch, if you would like to know more about this life changing school!

My IIN journey so far

I originally started this blog to share my experiences as I train to be a Holistic Health Coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.  Now that I’ve reached the end of my first 12 weeks, I think this is a good time to write about my journey so far.

The Beginning

Before signing up with IIN, I was already a fully qualified nutritionist, having completed my training with a college in Dublin. I was anxious to further my education and I began to do some research online. IIN kept cropping up, and I must admit that although I was intrigued, I was also hesitant. Health Coaching is alive and well in the US, but it is still a very new concept here in Ireland.  Despite this though, I found myself coming back to their website again & again. Eventually I decided to bite the bullet & go for it!

The enrollment process could not have been easier. Once I’d expressed my interest I got a warm email from Coach Blair who told me she’d have a member of the team call me at a time that was convenient for me.  I spoke to a lovely girl named Tara who answered all my questions for me & who took my registration details over the phone. I gave her my full name, postal address & preferred payment method details. The whole process took less than 15 minutes! Immediately after our call, I was sent the contract to look over & once I’d agreed to the terms & conditions I was officially enrolled! I also received information regarding the schools app, how to download it &  what devices it works best with.  A fortnight later, I was so excited to receive my welcome pack in the post, which was full of IIN goodies.

Prior to officially starting the course, I had access to what IIN refers to as the “Fundamentals”. This is a great introduction to the program & to IIN’s teaching methods. At this time I was also invited to the official student support group on Facebook & encouraged to start connecting with some of my future classmates. The program launched for my class on February 10th, & every monday a new module is released onto the app. These are a combination of audio lectures, video lectures, reading materials & health coaching resources.  I also have 24 hour access to a dietary theory & reference library, as well as our online education forum where students can network & delve deeper into the weeks material. As if all of that wasn’t enough, I have a college assigned Health Coach to work with for the duration of my training, a study group & I have & I am a peer coach. The whole program is so interactive-I truly love it!

The course is divided into 40 modules, with an exam to be completed online after every 10. You will need to pass each of these. Also you must complete 6 out of 12 coaching calls (with your assigned Health Coach) & submit 6 health histories. Honestly though, the support you’ll receive from IIN along the way makes all of this 100% doable!

The Importance of Health Coaches

Woo hoo! I am 25% of the way through my Holistic Health Coach training with the Institute For Integrative Nutrition and I am absolutely LOVING it.

Keep an eye out for my upcoming blog post where I will share all about my experiences so far. In the mean time here’s a little video all about the importance of Health Coaches.

What’s Your Personality Type?

How well do you really know yourself? If somebody were to ask you right now, what your best qualities and greatest strengths are, would you be able to answer?

While the phrase “taking time out to find yourself” may conjure up images of free-spirited hippies on the beaches of Goa in the 1960’s, it should not be a luxury afforded only to the young, or to the incredibly wealthy. Imagine how much easier our lives would be, if we really understood who we are, and why we do the things we do.  It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that we would be happier, have better relationships, and more meaningful careers.

Personal development is  a big part of my journey to become a Holistic Health Coach with IIN and last week we were introduced to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.  This is a questionnaire that aims to identify our characteristics based on our preferences. You can find out more about it here, or you can take a version of it  here.

Me, I’m  an ISFJ

Some characteristics of people with ISFJ personality types are;

  • Reliable, stable and down-to-earth
  • Enjoys order and structure
  • Dislikes conflict and confrontation
  • Kind, warm-hearted and considerate
  • Practical-minded
  • Likes concrete information
  • Very aware of other people’s feelings

But the best part for me was the discovery that ISFJ types do well in healthcare professions, particularly counselling and coaching!! It confirms to me again, that I am exactly where I am meant to be, and that finally, I am on the right path. Why did I not hear about this years ago?

I challenge you all to find out your “type”-you never know what you might learn!
